Deep sea fishing off the Cancun shore offers diverse marine life

The waters off Cancun offer some of the most diverse marine life in the Caribbean and provide a near guarantee that those on a fishing jaunt won't come home empty handed.
"Some 500 species - including sailfish, wahoo, bluefin, marlin, barracuda and red snapper – live in the waters off Cancun," according to Fodor's travel guide on the area. Fish that are particularly likely to be biting during the summer months are sailfish, marlin, wahoo and bonita.
Deep sea fishing boats can be chartered, usually for four, six or eight-hour shifts. Rates often include a captain and first mate, as well as gear, bait and refreshments.
Those taking advantage of the sport should be prepared for some heavy pulling. According to DeepSeaFishingCancun.com, Sailfish can range in size from 45 to 100 lbs., while white marlin ranges from 50 to 100 lbs. Blue marlins often weigh in the hundreds. Wahoo, in the range of 20 to 85 lbs., and bonita that generally are 5 to 25 lbs., are among the smaller fish.
